An uptrend is a staircase: each rally peak (swing high) tops the last, and each dip (swing low) also bottoms higher than the last. That sequence — higher highs AND higher lows — is the simplest, most reliable sign buyers are in control. When it flips to lower highs and lower lows, control has passed to sellers and the trend is down. Reading structure keeps you on the right side of the move.

Picture a stock stepping up: it rallies to Rs 300, dips to Rs 280, rallies to Rs 330, dips to Rs 310, then pushes to Rs 360. Each high tops the last (300 to 330 to 360) and each dip bottoms higher (280 to 310) - higher highs and higher lows, buyers in control. The moment a dip breaks below the previous low instead, that staircase is cracking and control may be shifting.

Big enough to see clearly on the timeframe you trade - a swing high is a peak with lower highs on both sides, a swing low a trough with higher lows around it. Tiny intraday jiggles are noise. Zoom to the daily chart if you're a swing trader; smaller squiggles just create false signals.

One break is a warning, not a verdict. A single lower low can be a shakeout that recovers; a real trend change usually needs a lower high to follow it too. Treat the first break as a cue to tighten risk and watch, not to flip bearish on the spot.
