Think in R, not rupees

score in R, not rupees −1R = your risk +2R −1R +3R −1R
R is your unit of risk — the distance from entry to stop. Instead of counting rupees, count R: risk Rs 1,000 (that's 1R) and make Rs 2,000, and that's +2R. Thinking in R strips out position size and price, so a Rs 500 stock and a Rs 5,000 stock are judged on the same scale, and a run of trades becomes a simple string like +2R, −1R, +3R, −1R. It turns trading into a countable game of expectancy — your average R per trade — instead of an emotional tally of profit and loss.
📌 For instance ·
Two trades: on a Rs 500 stock you risk Rs 1,000 and make Rs 2,000; on a Rs 4,000 stock you risk Rs 1,000 and lose it. In rupees that's +2,000 and -1,000 — messy to compare. In R it's simply +2R and -1R. Line up a month as +2R, -1R, -1R, +3R, +1R and you can just add them: +4R total on 1R risked per trade — a clear read on your edge that price and size can't blur.

❓ Common questions ·
Why not just track profit and loss in rupees?
Rupees hide your skill behind position size. A big rupee win might just be a big position on a mediocre trade; a small rupee loss might be a great, well-sized one. R normalises everything to units of risk, so you judge the decision, not the bet size.
What is a 'good' average R per trade?
Even a small positive average — say +0.2R to +0.5R per trade — compounds powerfully over many trades, because it's consistent. Chasing huge single R-multiples usually means taking bad risks. Steady positive expectancy beats occasional heroics.
