Lesson · Risk Management

Survive first — why risk beats reward

a loss needs a bigger gain to recover −25% +33% −50% +100% −75% +300%
In trading your first job isn't to make money — it's to not lose so much that you can't continue. Losses hurt asymmetrically: a 50% loss needs a 100% gain just to break even, and a 90% loss needs 900%. So a professional protects capital first, with small controlled losses, and lets the winners handle the returns. Survive the bad trades and the good ones compound; blow up once and the game is over. Risk management isn't the boring part of trading — it IS the trade.
Live concept · the maths of a loss
A 50% loss needs a 100% gain to recover — why capping losses matters most.50% नुक़सान की भरपाई को 100% चाहिए — इसलिए नुक़सान सीमित रखना सबसे ज़रूरी है।
📌 For instance ·
Lose 50% of your capital and you now need a +100% gain just to get back to even — not 50%. Lose 75% and you need +300%. That's the maths that makes protecting capital the whole game: a small, controlled loss is a dip you recover from in a few good trades, but a deep one can take years — or end the account. Survive first; the returns are the easy part.
❓ Common questions ·
If I'm playing safe, won't I miss the big gains?
Protecting capital and chasing gains aren't opposites — you can't compound gains from an account that's blown up. Small controlled losses keep you in the game so your winners have time to work. The traders who last aren't the boldest; they're the ones who never took a fatal loss.
I'm down 40% — should I take a big risk to win it back fast?
That's exactly how a bad drawdown becomes a fatal one. 'Revenge sizing' after a loss is the classic account-ender. Cut risk, don't increase it — go back to small, disciplined trades and let recovery compound slowly.

You're down 50% on your account. What gain do you now need just to get back to where you started?
