Moats, valuation & the FA checklist
A moat is a durable advantage that lets a company defend its profits from competitors — a trusted brand, a network everyone's already on, a genuine cost advantage, high switching costs, or patents. Moats are why some businesses stay profitable for decades. But even a wonderful business can be a poor investment if you overpay: valuation asks whether the price is reasonable relative to the company's earning power. Put it together into a checklist — profit growing, high ROE, low debt, profits turning into real cash, a visible moat, honest management, and a sensible valuation — and you have a quick, honest quality filter. It won't tell you WHEN to buy (that's technicals), but it keeps weak businesses out of your basket.
📌 For instance ·
Think of a dominant consumer brand people buy on habit: rivals can't easily lure its customers away, so it keeps earning high returns year after year — that's a moat. But even that business is a poor buy at a P/E of 90, because you'd be paying decades of earnings upfront. Run the checklist — growing profit, high ROE, low debt, real cash, a clear moat, honest management, a sensible price — and only when most boxes tick does a name deserve a place on your quality watchlist.
❓ Common questions ·
Can't I just buy the best company regardless of price?
A wonderful business bought at a crazy price can still be a bad investment — you can wait years for the earnings to justify what you paid. Quality and valuation are both required: a great company at a fair price, not a great company at any price.
How do I spot a moat as a beginner?
Ask a simple question: why can't a competitor easily steal this company's customers or undercut its prices? If the answer is a strong brand, a network people are locked into, a real cost advantage, high switching costs, or patents, it likely has a moat. If there's no clear answer, assume it doesn't.
