Key ratios — PE, PB, ROE, debt

standardise, then compare vs sector + history P/Evaluation ROE >15%quality D/Eleverage no single ratio decides — check reported vs adjusted EPS
Ratios turn raw numbers into comparable signals. The P/E (price ÷ earnings per share) is a valuation gauge — roughly how many years of current earnings you're paying for the stock; high can mean expensive or high-growth. ROE and ROCE (return on equity / capital employed) show how well the company turns money into profit — above ~15% is healthy. The debt-to-equity ratio flags how leveraged it is. The rules of thumb: never judge a ratio alone, always compare within the same sector and against the company's own history, and check that earnings aren't inflated by one-off gains (reported vs 'adjusted' EPS). A cheap-looking P/E built on a one-time profit isn't really cheap.
📌 For instance ·
A stock trades at a P/E of 15 while its sector averages 25 — it looks cheap. But check further: its ROE is only 8% (the sector's is 18%) and debt is high. The low P/E isn't a bargain; it's the market pricing in a weaker, more leveraged business. Now flip it: a P/E of 40 can be reasonable if ROE is 25% and profits compound fast. Ratios only mean something in context — against the sector and the company's own history.
❓ Common questions ·
Is a low P/E always a good deal?
No — a low P/E can signal a cheap stock OR a struggling business the market rightly distrusts (a 'value trap'). And it can be fake if built on a one-off gain. Always pair P/E with quality (ROE, debt, growth) and compare within the sector; cheapness alone is not an edge.
Which single ratio matters most?
There isn't one — that's the trap. ROE/ROCE (quality), debt-to-equity (safety) and P/E (valuation) each answer a different question, and a company needs to pass all three. A great score on one can't rescue a terrible score on another; judge them together.
