The P&L — is the business profitable?

revenue → less costs → profit Revenue → Op. profit → Net profit
The Profit & Loss statement (or income statement) tells you whether the business actually makes money over a period. It flows top to bottom: Revenue (total sales) minus the costs of running the business gives Operating profit (the core engine), and after interest and tax you reach Net profit — the bottom line. Divide profit by revenue and you get the margin, showing how much of each rupee of sales the company keeps. What you want is revenue AND profit growing together over several years. Beware revenue rising while profit falls (a margin squeeze), or a one-off gain — like selling a building — dressing up a weak year.
📌 For instance ·
A company reports Rs 1,000 cr revenue, Rs 150 cr operating profit and Rs 90 cr net profit — a 9% net margin. Last year it was Rs 800 cr revenue and Rs 70 cr net profit, so both sales and profit are growing and the margin improved. That's the healthy pattern. Compare it to a firm whose revenue rose but net profit fell: same 'growth' headline, but the margin squeeze says costs or interest are eating the gains.
❓ Common questions ·
What's the difference between operating profit and net profit?operating profit
Operating profit is what the core business earns before interest and tax — the engine's output. Net profit is what's left after paying interest on debt and tax — what actually belongs to shareholders. A big gap between them often means heavy debt (large interest) is eating the operating profit.
Is a company with rising revenue always a good buy?
No — revenue is only the top line. If profit isn't rising with it, the company may be 'buying' growth at the expense of margins, or its costs are out of control. Always check that profit and margins are growing too, not just sales.
