A breakout is when price pushes above a resistance level or out of a sideways range, usually on higher volume — a sign demand has overwhelmed supply and a new move may be starting. Volume matters: a breakout without volume often fails.

One day it closes at Rs 968 on double its usual volume - price has pushed clear of the range and demand has finally overwhelmed supply, so a fresh move up may be starting. But notice the volume: had it nudged past Rs 950 on thin trade, the odds of it falling back into the range would be high. A breakout without volume often fails.

There's no certain way, but two things tilt the odds: a decisive close beyond the level (not just an intraday poke) and a clear expansion in volume. A break on thin volume that slips back inside the range within a day or two is the classic fake-out. Even a clean-looking one can fail - manage risk with a stop.

Chasing the first tick is risky - many breakouts pull back to retest the broken level before running, and some fail outright. Some traders wait for the candle to close beyond it, or for a retest to hold, to reduce fake-outs. Whatever you choose, decide your entry and stop before you act, not after.
