A few candlestick shapes recur so often they've earned names. A doji has almost no body (open and close nearly equal) — a standoff, signalling indecision. A hammer is a small body sitting atop a long lower wick: after a fall, it shows buyers slammed the lows back up — a possible bottom. Its mirror, the shooting star (long upper wick after a rise), warns of a top. A bullish engulfing is a big green candle that completely swallows the prior red one — buyers decisively taking control. These signal most when they appear at a level and after a clear trend, not floating in the middle of nowhere.

The next day confirms with a green candle. That's the textbook context: a reversal candle, at a level, after a clear downtrend. The same hammer floating in the middle of a choppy range would mean far less.

Rarely. A pattern is a clue about who's winning, not a standalone signal. It carries weight when it appears at a meaningful level (support/resistance) and after a clear trend, ideally confirmed by the next candle and volume. In the middle of nowhere, most patterns are noise.
